Breast Reconstruction

Breast deformities are rare cases but it can happen to anyone. Whether you’re a man or a woman, you may suffer from this condition. One of these breast deformities is called Hypoplasia Breast Disorder.

What is Hypoplasia Breast Disorder?

This is a disorder wherein one of the breast or both do not develop properly. Women with breast hypoplasia are often emotionally troubled because of the unpleasant appearance, and because of this, they usually seek medical treatment to restore the body’s aesthetic harmony.

According to studies, the tissues do not mature or develop into an adult breast. The normal process is not completed, so an adult woman may have a chest that appears juvenile. Though anatomical maturity is not completed, the breasts will still be a functional sensual organ.

For an adult woman, it is a great concern to have breast hypoplasia because it can interfere with breastfeeding. However, some patients claim that they have limited or normal mammary function despite hypoplasia.

Because of the psychological issues that affected women may face a great percentage of breast hypoplasia patients decide to undergo breast augmentation. However, the breast implants will not be able to address breastfeeding problems and the immature sensory response.

The Symptoms

  • How will you know if you have hypoplasia breast disorder? You need to watch out for the following symptoms:
  • Breasts are widely spaced (over 1.5 inches)
  • One of the breast is larger than the other or breast asymmetry
  • Stretch marks on the breasts despite the absence of growth during pregnancy or puberty
  • Empty sac or tubular shape of the breast
  • Bulbous areolae
  • No changes in breast appearance after puberty and through adulthood

According to medical professionals, a patient with breast hypoplasia may have small or large breasts but the symptoms mentioned above are more pronounced. It is not the size that is the primary symptom of the disorder but the lack of glandular tissues in the breasts.

The Causes Breast Hypoplasia

Breast hypoplasia can be caused by several factors. However, studies are still inconclusive because at times, the condition is idiopathic. There are cases when the root cause of the disorder is not identified.

The following are the most common causes of breast hypoplasia:

  1. Genetic component – some studies reveal that this condition usually runs in the family
  2.  Environmental contaminants – these are also referred to as endocrine disruptors and such contaminants affect the bodily functions ;exposure to these contaminants during childhood or in utero may cause breast hypoplasia
  3. Luteal phase defect – insufficient progesterone after ovulation (luteal phase) can also affect glandular development
  4. PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome – otherwise known as Stein-Levental syndrome. This is a major concern for breastfeeding mothers

Since some of the causes are related to hormones, some say that hormone therapy can address breast hypoplasia. There are also studies that show this disorder can be caused by a damage or injury to the underdeveloped breast of a girl. Hence, when the girl grows up, she will not have normal breasts.

The Candidates of Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Medical professionals agree that the ideal candidates for breast reconstruction surgery are those with underdeveloped breasts, including patients with breast hypoplasia. Through this treatment, a woman can have fully formed and beautiful breasts.

Only a medical professional and experienced surgeon can determine if you are a good candidate for breast reconstruction. During the initial consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your objectives and motivation for undergoing such procedure. Your medical history will also be checked, along with a clinical exam. Other factors are assessed like the bra size, breast volume, stretch marks, tone, and pigmentation. It will also include photographic documentation.

Reconstruction Surgery Goals

The goals of women who want to undergo reconstruction surgery may vary. Surgery goals can include the following – would-be mothers are motivated to undergo surgery to enhance their mammary functions and for achieving aesthetic symmetry. Physical beauty is important, and this is of the reasons why many women are willing to undergo surgery despite the high cost in involves.

Patients Quotes

Patient #1

For medical professionals, she had a medical condition (PCOS) which contributed to breast hypoplasia. Because of this, she considered surgery. Before, a lot of people took breast enhancement or augmentation negatively. Since her condition has affected her self-esteem and confidence, she and her family decided that surgery was the best alternative.

Patient #2

A soon-to-be mom knows that she has tubular hypoplastic or underdeveloped breast. She was overly concerned that she can’t breastfeed successfully because of her condition. She decided to talk with her health care provider and lactation consultant before delivery. There were suggested measures like breastfeeding soon after the baby is born, the use of a pump to stimulate production of milk, and breast compression. It involved a thorough plan to keep track of the baby’s development and weight. To her amazement, she was able to breastfeed her baby without much problems.

What are the Solutions to Solve Breast Hypoplasia?

The ideal solution for breast hypoplasia is surgery or breast augmentation Thailand. Augmentation mammoplasty through the use of breast implants is recommended but there are also other techniques for patients such as fat grafting, microsurgical reconstruction, and muscle flap-based surgery.

If a woman is suffering from low self-esteem and lack of confidence, she can also undergo counseling through support groups.

How the Operation is Performed?

After the initial consultation, an anesthesilogist will be consulted, followed by an ultrasound or mammogram. In most cases, the surgery will only take about an hour or so. Patients can expect minimal scarring under the areola or in the armpit. A drawn-on incision is made; the
implant is placed inside, and is closed through absorbable stitches. The patient will have to wear a bra-like compression garment for a few days. In most cases, you will only stay in the hospital for two nights after the surgery.

Most surgical procedures follow the same steps, with variations in the techniques used. If you are diagnosed with hypoplasia breast disorder, you need to learn about the treatment options available to you.
