CO2 Laser Treatment
What is CO2 Laser Treatment for Skin Resurfacing?
CO2 laser treatment is an advanced skin resurfacing procedure that uses carbon dioxide lasers to remove damaged skin layers and promote collagen production and natural healing. The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is an ablative versatile tool with 10,600 nm wavelength. CO2 laser delivers microbeams of laser energy into the skin, creating controlled thermal damage. This process stimulates collagen production while leaving the surrounding tissue intact, allowing for faster healing and minimal downtime.
This procedure is highly effective for treating pigmentation issues and skin lesions, such as skin tags, lentigines, or moles. Over the past decade, advances in laser technology have allowed dermatologists to improve the appearance of scars and wrinkles and to remove benign skin growths using both ablative and non-ablative lasers.
Difference Between Fractional and Non-Fractional CO2 Laser Treatments
Fractional CO2 Laser
- Uses a fractionated laser beam that targets only a portion of the skin at a time, leaving surrounding tissue intact for faster healing.
- Less downtime compared to non-fractional lasers.
- Ideal for treating wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin texture with minimal side effects.
Non-Fractional CO2 Laser
- Treats the entire skin surface in a single session, leading to a more intense recovery period.
- Provides more dramatic results for severe wrinkles, deep scars, and significant skin resurfacing.
- Longer downtime, with redness and peeling lasting for a few weeks.
CO2 Laser Treatment Procedure
Before going under the procedure of removing unwanted skin blemishes, the therapist will apply an anesthetic cream to the treatment area for 30 to 45 minutes. The duration of the treatment will vary from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the area treated. Only a single treatment is required except for deeper skin lesions such as syringomas, deep moles, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, which may require 2 to 3 treatments.
Post-Care Instruction
CO2 laser treatment involves minimal discomfort and rapid recovery, enabling a quick return to daily routine. The treated area should remain dry for at least 24 hours after the treatment. Expect mild redness, swelling, and peeling for up to one week. Apply the prescribed antibiotic ointment twice a day on the treated area.
For skin lesions on the face, the patient may resume their daily makeup after one week. Please note that skin lesions on the neck and body heal two times slower than on the face, and some side effects, like hyper-pigmentation, may appear but will resolve over time. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, and daily high-SPF sunscreen application is strongly recommended. Do not pick or scratch the treated skin to prevent scarring.
