Initial Consultation

During your initial visit to our clinic, our surgeon will explain the procedure to you in detail and answer any questions you may have. They’ll also give you a physical examination.

Preparation for the Procedure

On the day of the procedure, you’ll have to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery. You may experience dry eyes after the procedure, so it’s good to have someone to look after you. A lower blepharoplasty is performed using either local anesthesia, conscious sedation or general anesthesia. You’ll discuss the options for anesthesia during your initial consultation.

Administering the Anesthetic

Whichever option of anesthesia you choose, the surgeon will perform the surgery by first injecting a local anesthetic under the skin of your eyelid. The other two anesthesia options are to make you feel more comfortable.

Performing the Procedure

After waiting for your eyes to become numb, the surgeon will make a small, thin incision just below the line of your lower eyelashes, the eyelid’s natural crease, or inside the lower lid. They’ll use the incisions to remove or redistribute fat, muscle and sagging skin and suture the skin closed with tiny sutures.

The entire procedure takes no more than a few hours and the patient is free to return home soon after the surgery is completed.

Instructions for Recovery

After the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort around the eyes lasting for a week or two. You may also experience blurred vision and temporary sight impairment following the procedure. This is common and nothing to worry about. There can be swelling, which distorts the corneas and makes it difficult for your eyes to distribute tears evenly. This can lead to dryness and blurred vision. The swelling should lessen, and your vision should return to normal within a few days.

A cold compress can be used to help reduce the swelling. Sleeping with your head elevated also helps reduce swelling. You’ll want to avoid any strain to your eyes as much as possible during the initial healing period. Try to avoid reading, watching TV, or looking at any type of screen for prolonged periods of time. You’ll also want to avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent tearing the sutures and causing further swelling and discomfort

Many people return to work and their daily activities within a week. However, please avoid any strenuous activities for at least three weeks to allow for the swelling to completely subside and your sutures to dissolve.

Swelling and Bruising

Your initial swelling should subside within 1-2 weeks, and the swelling and any discoloration should completely disappear within 6-8 months.
