Find out if breast augmentation surgery is right for you.

Could Breast Augmentation Be the Right Choice for You?

M any women are choosing to have breast augmentation surgery these days. The procedure is also known as augmentation mammoplasty. It’s not just a procedure for celebrities and women in the public eye anymore. The surgery has become accepted as a very normal cosmetic procedure. There are many reasons for having the surgery, but one of the most-stated reasons is simply to improve one’s self-confidence.

Improving self-confidence and self-esteem is the number one reason for undergoing most cosmetic procedures. Having your physical characteristics improved also helps change the way you think about yourself. By changing a physical aspect of yourself to the way you’ve always dreamt of, you cease to dwell on that aspect. It’s like a rebirth for many people that have always been unhappy with an aspect of their looks.

Renewed self-confidence can be almost a miraculous improvement in many people's lives. Many become much happier and more social in their day-to-day lives. They become more sure of themselves and enjoy meeting and interacting with people.

The chance to regain this renewed sense of self-confidence has meant that breast augmentation, as well as breast reduction and breast reconstruction, have become immensely popular.

Let’s take a look at a typical breast augmentation procedure from the initial consultation to the recovery phase. This will allow you to decide if the procedure is right for you.

Planning Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

The first phase of any surgical procedure consists of a consultation with the doctor or surgeon who will be performing the procedure. In the case of breast surgery, there are some decisions to be made before the procedure can take place.

The doctor needs to learn the patient's expectations for the procedure, and the patient needs to make a few decisions regarding the size and shape of their new breasts.

Types of Breast Implants

There are two types of breast implants generally offered: round and teardrop. The doctor will suggest one or the other, depending on the patient's expectations and body type and condition.

Round implants are suggested when the patient wants to add fullness to the top of the breasts, while a teardrop-shaped implant works better for patients wanting to achieve a more natural look.

Round (Memory Gel)

These implants are the most popular choice, and they're suitable for most patients. They offer a soft, full, proportioned look and work best on patients that already have some tissue in their breasts, with little or no sagging.

Teardrop (Memory Shape)

Teardrop-shaped implants are so-named because of their shape. They offer a more naturally-shaped breast and are fuller at the bottom. They appear like an oval shape from the front and are often used in breast reconstruction. They're also used for patients who have very little volume in the chest area. The outside of the implants is normally textured to ensure they don't flip or rotate after insertion.

Breast augmentation doesn't suit everyone. One of the most crucial aspects of breast augmentation is the side profile - how far your breasts protrude from the chest wall. A large amount of protrusion can look unnatural and ungainly. Patients who choose breast augmentation to fix sagging breasts might be better off choosing a breast lift rather than an augmentation. Even if they want to increase the size of the breasts, a fat transfer can provide a solution that looks completely natural.

Arriving at the best solution for your particular case is the purpose of the initial consultation.

Augmentation Procedure and Recovery

Once the implant options have been explored and decided upon, the doctor informs the patient about the details of the procedure. You'll also undergo a thorough physical examination before the procedure is scheduled. If your general health is good, the doctor will schedule your surgery.

Most augmentation procedures these days are performed on an outpatient basis while the patient is under general anesthesia. In other words, you'll be asleep during the procedure, but you won't have to spend the night in a hospital following the procedure.

During the procedure the surgeon makes an incision either under the arm, around the areola, near the navel, or under the fold of the breast to act as an insertion point for the implant. After the incision, the sterile implant is inserted behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle and correctly oriented. Then the incision is closed with sutures.

If the surgeon chooses to make an incision under the arm or near the navel, they will perform the procedure using an endoscope. This means there will be no scarring around your breasts, but you may have a small scar under your arm or near your navel. The implant may be inserted empty, moved to the breast area using the endoscope, and then filled with saline and closed. This procedure is also used for incisions near your navel.

After the procedure, you’ll be moved to a recovery room for a few hours and monitored by staff. The anesthesia may leave you feeling slightly groggy, but this feeling will soon fade. If you show good signs of recovery, you’ll be released and can return home. Please arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home.

During the first 3 to 5 days, you’ll experience discomfort, but your doctor will prescribe medicine to help control the pain. You should heed the recommendations of your doctor regarding the amount of movement, specifically in the upper body, that you should attempt during this period.

You may also experience minor bleeding at the incision sites, but this is normal. Normal activities and exercise can be resumed at the discretion of your doctor. Complete recovery takes about six to eight weeks.
