VASER Liposuction is a Solution for Unwanted Body Fat

M any people start a program of diet and exercise, only to find they aren’t as effective in achieving the slim and trim body they had imagined, especially in certain areas. These people may have problem areas of their body that simply are slow to respond, or don’t respond at all to a regimen of diet and exercise without going to extremes. However, there is a way to quickly achieve the body they had imagined. These people may be the ideal candidates for VASER liposuction.

VASER liposuction is an improvement on the traditional liposuction procedure. In traditional liposuction, fat deposits under the skin are broken apart into smaller pieces using a cannula, water pressure or lasers. These smaller pieces of fat are then vacuumed out of your body using a cannula attached to a suction machine.

With the VASER method, fat deposits can be precisely located and removed. The VASER method is more suitable for smaller fat deposits, and it's gentler than the usual way liposuction is performed, therefore minimizing the bruising and damage to surrounding tissue.

VASER is an acronym that stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. This technologically advanced ultrasound method disrupts the bonds present between fat cells. Instead of the cannula, water pressure or lasers being used to perform this part of the procedure, the ultrasound does a gentler and more effective job. It's also much more controlled and precise in the areas of the body it can target, so it requires a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon to perform the procedure.

Not a Weight Loss Solution

Before we get into a detailed explanation of VASER liposuction, it should be emphasized that liposuction is not designed to be a weight loss solution. People who experience the best results from liposuction are those that are within 15 pounds of their target weight.

Liposuction is for people who want to rid their bodies of specific fat deposits in certain areas and reveal the muscle tone underneath. The technique is more of a body-sculpting solution than a weight loss tool.

If you’re within close range of your ideal body weight, you may be an ideal candidate for this improved type of liposuction. Doctors may recommend this treatment if you’re a generally healthy person who doesn’t have a history of bleeding issues and doesn’t smoke.

Details About VASER

The process begins with a consultation with one of our doctors to discuss your desired results for the procedure. The doctor will perform a physical examination to ensure you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure and that your expectations can be achieved. The usual targets of this procedure are:

  • Arms
  • Chin and back
  • Chest
  • Upper back
  • Stomach and waistline
  • Hips and thighs
  • Buttocks

Lower Blepharoplasty

During a typical VASER liposuction procedure, the patient is either under general anesthesia or a lighter form of anesthesia called conscious sedation, where the patient is awake but sedated and calm.

A saline solution or a tumescent fluid containing a local anesthetic is injected into the area to be treated through a small incision. Then, ultrasound probes are placed into the skin through the incision and activated to begin breaking up the fat tissue by ultrasound. The fatty tissue will gently start to break apart and be removed from the body by a cannula with a vacuum attachment.

Preparing for the Procedure

Tell your doctor about any medications you may be taking before the procedure is scheduled; they may adjust the date of your procedure to ensure any problem medications are out of your system.

Avoid taking any over-the-counter blood-thinning medicines like ibuprofen in the two weeks leading up to your procedure. Avoid drinking any alcohol the night before your procedure, as it can act as a blood thinner by preventing blood from clotting.

You should also arrange for a family member or friend to pick you up after the procedure, as the after-effects of the anesthesia, as well as the soreness of the procedure itself, will mean you’re not able to drive.

Recovery from VASER Liposuction

After the procedure is over, you'll be woken from the anesthesia and taken to a recovery room for a few hours while the clinic staff monitor you.

You’ll be released to go home at the discretion of the doctor, and given sterilized pads to reapply to the treated area as necessary. You may also be asked to increase your fluid intake during the first few days of recovery. This will help flush the last of the anesthesia from your body. Finally, it may be necessary to wear a compression garment for a few weeks over the target area to help reduce the swelling.

All liposuction procedures are typically slow to reveal their results, so remember that the results may not become apparent until three to six months after the procedure, once any swelling has gone down. For some patients, it takes a few months after the swelling has subsided for final results to appear. Your body tissue in the area of the procedure has to settle and adjust to the new lack of fatty deposits.

You’ve been given a shortcut to a trimmer and healthier-looking body. As long as you stick to a regimen of watching your diet and exercising regularly, the results can be permanent. But it’s entirely possible for the old fat deposits to return if you’re not vigilant about maintaining your new physique.

Also, keep in mind that if you're older and want to reverse the results of the aging process in certain areas of your body, liposuction may not be the right path to take. Your body naturally goes through changes as you start to age. The simple effects of gravity, weight fluctuations, and inflammation in certain parts of the body cannot be undone with liposuction. Your doctor will be very clear about the areas where liposuction can make a difference for you.
