Acne Treatments Can Improve Your Complexion

A cne often begins when we enter puberty, but no one can predict how badly you'll be affected by acne or how long it will last. This type of acne is called hormonal acne. It’s fairly universal and afflicts all skin types. There is also environmental-related acne that appears in people of all age groups and can be caused by diet, stress and other external factors. In Bangkok, the effects of every type of acne can be reduced by undergoing modern acne treatments that treat the causes as well as the resulting blemishes.

As we’ve learned more about acne, we’ve discovered that the skin disease can be triggered by many factors within the body as well as our external environment.

We’ll take a closer look at how and why acne affects so many people around the world and see how a clinic in Bangkok treats this common affliction.

Pathology of Acne

Whether it's related to the hormones of puberty or the factors within a person's environment, acne can become an affliction that demands medical attention.

Every case of acne is a disease of the sebaceous gland. This gland surrounds the hair follicles in the skin. When the gland encounters irritants, it produces more sebum, an oily substance in the skin. When the sebaceous gland produces more sebum, it causes the gland around the hair follicle to become inflamed. This can cause a rupture of the follicle or blockage of the follicular opening at the surface of the skin. Blockages and ruptures can cause the accumulation of bacteria, which further irritates the tissue surrounding the sebaceous gland. The bacteria that appears is called Propionibacterium acne. It’s one of the many causes of the physical effects of acne along with:

  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Excess circulating Androgen
  • Stress
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Poor lifestyle
  • Water and air pollutants
  • Cosmetics and various drugs

Hormonal acne can appear when the body is going through puberty. An excess amount of the hormone Androgen can begin circulating through the body and irritate the sebaceous glands surrounding the hair follicles in the skin.

Your genetics and family medical history can also play a part in whether you get acne, how serious your acne will be, and how long it will last.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

The microbiota in your gut can also have an effect on the health of your skin. This is called Leaky Gut Syndrome and is caused by unhealthy eating habits. These unhealthy habits include excessive alcohol, processed and inflammatory foods, laxatives, acid-lowering agents, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

Leaky Gut Syndrome can cause an alteration of your gut microbiota that can impair the gut barrier and allow entry of gut microbiota and metabolites into the bloodstream. This can cause an alteration in the skin microbiota and inflammation that can present itself as acne.

The result of these sebaceous gland ruptures and blockages are the telltale pustules, papules, nodules, blackheads and whiteheads on the surface of the skin, collectively known as acne.

Self-care to Prevent Acne

There are a number of ways you can protect your skin if you’re prone to developing acne of any type. The basic tenet of this self-care is to keep your skin as free from the known causes of acne as possible.

Use a gentle and non-irritating skin cleanser daily and moisturizers that are non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic. These products are formulated not to block your pores.

There are also some modifications you can make to your daily life. Try and eliminate as much stress as you can and cut down on the amount of greasy food you consume. If you’re taking hormones prescribed by your doctor, they may be a cause of increased acne flare-ups. Talk to your doctor about alternative treatments.

Our daily physical habits could also be a contributing factor to our acne. Try to keep your pillow cases, makeup brushes and phone screens as clean as possible. Dirty pillowcases and phones spend a lot of time pressed up against our faces, and makeup brushes can harbor bacteria that can lead to a breakout, so it’s important that they’re kept clean.

Medical Treatment of Acne

Comprehensive medical treatment of acne generally consists of four areas of treatment. The activity and inflammation of the sebaceous gland are the root causes of acne; therefore, one of the effective treatment methods is to use medicine that inhibits the activity of the glands. Once the activity of the glands is curtailed, another treatment of anti-inflammatories can be used.

Another effective method is to treat the Keratinocytes. These are the primary cells that constitute the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. Keratinocytes make up around 90% of the epidermis cells in humans. These Keratinocyte cells form a barrier that helps protect the epidermis from different causes of skin damage, including UV radiation, heat, pathogenic bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses. Treatments that control Keratinocyte differentiation from other types of skin cells have been effective in controlling acne.

The bacteria that develops when the sebaceous gland becomes ruptured or inflamed can also be treated effectively with antibacterial agents.

All of these four treatments involve a number of topical and oral retinoids, antimicrobials, antibiotics, oral contraceptives and isotretinoin.

At Nirunda, we perform blood tests to check if Leaky Gut Syndrome is apparent and Food Intolerance and Sensitivity Tests to find the root causes. Our doctor will then plan a combined treatment that best addresses the results of the tests.
